According to a February 2003 CDC publication entitled Atlas of Stroke Mortality: Racial, Ethnic, and Geographic Disparities in the United States, a total of 44,079 people (26,806 women and 17,273 men) ages 35 and older died from stroke during 1991–1998 in Michigan.

Overall, a total of 138,475 people in Michigan died from diseases of the heart during the years 1991–1995.

A stroke occurs when the arterial blood flow leading to or in the brain becomes blocked or ruptures. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain, so when the blood flow stops, the cells begin to die.
